IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:

• Literally có nghĩa là “nghĩa đen, nghĩa thực, chính xác của một từ hoặc lời nói”. 
• Figuratively chỉ việc “hiểu nghĩa bóng của một từ hay một lời nói chứ không hiểu theo nghĩa thực của nó”.

IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:

• Literally có nghĩa là "nghĩa đen, nghĩa thực, chính xác của một từ hoặc lời nói" (literally tương đương với từ actually "thật ra, thật sự")

IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:

• Peter is literally six-feet four-inches tall. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Peter cao đúng sáu feet bốn inch)
• The word "planet" literally means "wandering body". (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Từ "hành tinh" từ có nghĩa đen là "vật thể đang lang thang")

IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:

• Figuratively chỉ việc "hiểu nghĩa bóng của một từ hay một lời nói chứ không hiểu theo nghĩa thực của nó". 

IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:

• Figuratively, I feel dead from overwork. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Nói cho hoa mỹ thì tôi cảm thấy kiệt sức vì làm việc quá sức)
• Mary is, figuratively speaking, holding a gun to his head. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Nói cho hoa mỹ thì Mary đang gí súng vào đầu anh ta)

IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:

• AILING: ĐAU/ỐM (nghĩa đen) và ÈO ỌP/ĐANG SUY YẾU (nghĩa bóng) 
  • Nghĩa đen của ‘ailing’ là ‘ill/sick and not improving’ 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: She looked after her ailing father. 
  • Nghĩa bóng của ‘ailing’ là (of a business, government, etc.) ‘having a problem or getting weaker’ 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: Measures to help the ailing economy. 
• ANTIDOTE /ˈæntidəʊt/ TO: THUỐC GIẢI ĐỘC (nghĩa đen) và LIỀU THUỐC GIẢI (nghĩa bóng) 
  • Nghĩa đen của ‘antidote to’ là ‘a medicine that will stop the effects of a poison or a dangerous drug’.
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: There is no known antidote to the poison. 
  • Nghĩa bóng của ‘antidote to’ là ‘anything that takes away the effects of sth unpleasant’. 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ: 
      • The holiday was a marvellous antidote to the pressure of office work. 
      • A Mediterranean cruise was the perfect antidote to a long cold winter. 
• Dump /dʌmp/ 
  • Nghĩa thường (v): to put down or drop something in a careless way: đổ ầm, rơi phịch xuống 
  • Nghĩa từ lóng (v): to break off a romantic relationship without caring much about the other person’s feelings - chia tay không vấn vương, "đá". 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  If your boyfriend cheats on you, then you should dump him. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Nếu bạn trai cậu lừa dối, hãy đá anh ta không thương tiếc đi) 
• High /haɪ/ 
  • Nghĩa thường (adj): being a largedistance from top to bottom - cao 
  • Nghĩa từ lóng (adj): describing a person who is experiencing the effect of drugs making them mentally excited - (người) phê thuốc, phấn khích. 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  He always gets into fights when he’s high. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Mỗi khi phê thuốc, cậu ấy lại lao vào đánh nhau) 
• Hot /hɑːt/ 
  • Nghĩa thường (adj): high temperature - nóng, có nhiệt độ cao 
  • Nghĩa từ lóng (adj): sexually attractive, or feeling sexually excited - nóng bỏng, quyến rũ, hấp dẫn. 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  Wow, that girl is really hot! (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Trời ơi, cô gái kia mới quyến rũ làm sao) 
• Dig /dɪɡ/ 
  • Nghĩa thường (v): to form a hole by moving soil - đào lỗ 
  • Nghĩa từ lóng (v): to like, enjoy, or appreciate - thích, yêu quý, trân trọng. 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  You saw Taylor Swift in concert? I really dig her music! (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Cậu xem buổi diễn của Taylor Swift chứ? Tớ thực sự mê nhạc của cô ấy) 
• Dough /doʊ/ 
  • Nghĩa thường (n): flour mixed with water and often yeast, fat, or sugar, so that it is ready for baking - bột mì nhồi 
  • Nghĩa từ lóng (n): money - tiền (cách diễn đạt này cũng tương tự như tiếng Việt dùng từ "cơm, gạo" để chỉ về tiền bạc trong một số trường hợp). 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  They lost a lot of dough in that bad business deal. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Họ bị mất nhiều tiền khi thua lỗ vụ làm ăn kia) 
• ILL (adj): ĐAU/ỐM (nghĩa đen) và ILL (n) CĂN BỆNH (nghĩa bóng) 
  • Nghĩa đen của ‘ill’ là ‘suffering from illness or disease; not feeling well’. 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  Her father is seriously ill. 
  • Nghĩa bóng của ‘ill’, là danh từ chuyển từ loại (conversion) từ tính từ ‘ill’ có nghĩa ‘a problem or harmful thing; an illness’. 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  The ills of the modern world. 
• CURE /ˈkjʊə(r)/ /REMEDY /ˈremədi/ (FOR/TO): CHỮA BỆNH (nghĩa đen) và GIẢI PHÁP (nghĩa bóng) 
  • Nghĩa đen của ‘cure/remedy (for)’ là ‘sth such as a medicine or form of treatment that cures s.e who is ill’.
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  
      • What is the best cure for a hangover ? 
      • As yet there’s no known cure for this disease.  >> IELTS  TUTOR  hướng  dẫn  Cách dùng động từ "cure" tiếng anh (Cure sb of sth)
      • Salt water is a good home remedy for a sore throat. 
  • Nghĩa bóng của ‘cure/remedy (for/to) là ‘sth that solve a problem, improve a bad situation, etc.’. 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  
      • Do you think there is any cure for the nation’s economic troubles?
      • If you find it hard to live on your present salary, the best remedy would be to change jobs.
      •  There is no simple remedy for unemployment. 
      • There are a number of possible remedies to this problem. 
• PARALYSIS /pəˈræləsəs/ : CHỨNG LIỆT (nghĩa đen) và TÊ LIỆT (nghĩa bóng) 
  • Nghĩa đen của ‘paralysis’ là ‘a loss of control, and sometimes feeling in, part or most of the body, caused by disease or any injury to the nerves’. 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  The paralysis affects his right leg and he can only walk with difficulty. 
  • Nghĩa bóng của ‘paralysis’ là ‘a total inability to move, act, function, etc. 
    • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  
      • The strike caused total paralysis in the city.
      • The complete paralysis of industry caused by the electricians’ strike. 
• PANACEA FOR /ˌpænəˈsiːə/ : PHƯƠNG THUỐC CHỮA BÁCH BỆNH Cũng có một thuật ngữ tên một loại thuốc mà người xưa hy vọng chữa bách bệnh thì này chỉ mang nghĩa bóng ‘panacea’ (for something) có nghĩa ‘something that will solve all the problems of a particular situation’ một giải pháp cho mọi vấn đề’ nhưng ta vẫn thể dùng nghĩa đen của nó ở tiếng Việt  
  • IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:  
    • Librarians welcomed computerization as a panacea for all their cataloguing problems. 
    • There is no single panacea for the problem of unemployment.
